Charles Martin Lowhorn died on 7 July 1956 in Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky.1 He was buried in July 1956 in the Peolia Cemetery, Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky.1,5 His wife, Daisy Ethel Lowhorn, died on 19 July 1977.6 Daisy Ethel Lowhorn was buried in the Peolia Cemetery, Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky.7,8 My dad, Charlie Martin Lowhorn, didn't talk about his childhood to me. I married young and he had to work so we didn't have too many times where we could talk about his younger years in life but he got sick with arthritis, when he was about 50 years old. My brothers and sister, Dott, had to turn him with a sheet it hurt him so even to touch him.
He told my sister, Dott, about his childhood. My Grandparents, Jesse & Zilphie Jane (Butler) Lowhorn, left Tennessee and went to Whitewright, Texas. Dad and his sister Iona were born in Texas. Dad and Grandpa, Jesse, were out in a field that Grandpa was plowing. Somehow, data got his clothes on fire. He couldn't have been over 2 or 3 years old. Grandpa Jesse rolled him in the dirt and put out the fire. Dad had a scar on his back from the fire when he died.
Later, Grandpa and Grandma got typhoid fever and died leaving Dad and Aunt Iona by themselves. Grandpa and Grandma are supposed to be buried at Whitewright, Texas. I think Grandma's brother took Dad and Aunt Iona. His name was John Butler. But Dad told Dott that he didn't treat them well. He would let them go hungry; they had to eat off the floor. Then Dad got typhoid fever. His Uncle John slipped and gave him some watermelon and it made Dad sick. But, he said he started getting better. John Butler, or someone, wrote Allen Butler (John and Zilphie Jane's father) for him to come to Texas and bring them back to Kentucky. Great Grandpa Allen went to Texas in a buggy or wagon to get Dad and Iona and he raised them until they married. Someone, John or someone else, was going to put them in an orphan home if he hadn't come to Texas to get them. Dott said he, Dad, said he wanted to go back to visit his Mom and Dad's grave. This is what Dad told Dott different times, and Mom used to talk about it a lot. I certainly wish I could find their graves. I've written to Whitewright and Sherman, Texas trying to find something about them (Grandpa and Grandma.)
I do know for a fact that Dad (Charlie) and Iona were with John Butler in the 1900 census in Comanche County, Texas. A lady at the library sent it to me. I guess his Grandpa, Allen Butler, told him a lot as he grew up. There is supposed to be a letter here in Clinton County that was written to Allen Butler. I haven't seen it yet but hope to soon. The letter asked Allen to come to Texas and get Dad and Aunt Iona. Allen must have told Dad these things as he was growing up.
There are so many stories about the Lawhorns. On a picture that Elmer (Whitie) Butler had is written that: Allen Butler drove a yoke of steers to help my dad, Charlie Lawhorn) and his sister, Ona, Grandpa, Jesse, and Grandma, Zilphie Jane (Butler), Lawhorn move to Whitewright, Texas. They got sick and died out there. James A. (Jim) Lowhorn, Jesse's brother, and Allen Butler, Zilphie's father, started to Whitewright. This is the story I was told by another man. He told me that James and Allen started to Whitewright, Texas. James got sick at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was riding a black stallion. Allen went on. He was in a buggy trying to cross a river or creek and the buggy tore up. When got to Whitewright, he found Dad and Ona setting on the floor eating out of tin plates. So, he (Allen) headed back to Kentucky traveling by day and camping at night. When Iona would get tired, he would put her in the saddlebag so she could rest. Great Grandpa Allen raised the children, Dad and Aunt Iona, until they married. Jesse is William G. Lawhorn's son. I have a picture of Allen and Margaret (Ferguson) Butler, Will Ed, Gilla Ann, Dellia, Charlie Martin Lowhorn, and Iona Lowhorn.
