James Pickney Hipp began military service in January 1862 in Pike County, Arkansas, in the 19th Arkansas Volunteers of the Confederate Army.4 He served in the military the Confederate Army until his death.
James P. Hipp was captured at Arkansas Post, 11 Jan 1863, being carried to Camp Douglas, Ill. He was exchanged at City Point, VA.4


James Pickney Hipp died in Petersburg, Virginia, on 4 May 1863 at age 24 years and 3 months.4 He was buried in the Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.4
