J. H. Spence, 59, Dies Following Long Illness
J. H. Spence, 59, widely known carpenter and former resident of Levelland, died at the West Texas Hospital in Lubbock August 14, at 11:15 P. M. after and illness of about eight months.
Mr. Spence left Levelland last February and went to Fort Stockton, where for a time his illness seemed to improve. He became critically ill about a week before his death and was brought by ambulance from Fort Stockton to the Lubbock hospital.
Funeral services were held August 15 at 4 p. m. at the First Baptist church in Levelland with Earnest West, pastor of the Austin street Church of Christ officiating, assisted by Rev. J. H. Wright, pastor of the First Baptist church.
Burial was in the Levelland cemetery with the Plains Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Palbearers were, Heck McMillian, J. M. Brown, Tom Uushaw, Elvie Holman, Loyd Fain and Loy Fortner, all of Levelland.
Flower girls serving both at the church and graveside were Mrs. Ladine Brown, Mrs. Maurice ?harris, Mrs. Mary Jo Brock, Mrs. Earline McDonald, Mrs. Marie Burnett, all of Levelland and Mrs. Grace Foster of Lubbock.
Mr. Spence is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ora Spence; three sons, Jack Spence, Oklahoma City, Howard and Curry Spence, both of Forty Stockton; a daughter, Mrs. Otto Wright of Levelland; and five grandchildren
Other survivors are his step-mother, Mrs. R. L. Spence of Ennis; two half-brothers, J. C. and William Spence, both of Ennis; a half-sister, Mrs. Odie Shue of Lancaster; three cousins, Mrs. Irene Ellis and Mrs. Helen Hibbets and Mrs. W. W. Knox, all of Levelland.
All of his immediate family with the exception of his step-mother and William Spence, were present at the funeral.3
