     James F. Hancock was born circa 1837 in Tennessee.1 He was the son of Leander Morrow Hancock and Catherine C. Moxley. On the census of 1840 in Coffee County, Tennessee, James F. was probably a male under 5 years of age residing with Lea M. Hancock.2 The census of 1 June 1850 enumerated on 30 September 1850 in Wilson County, Tennessee, listed James "Handcock" as a 13-year-old residing with Leander Handcock.1 He married Mary Elizabeth Light Craft, daughter of William G. Craft and Elizabeth M. McKenney, on 6 February 1859 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas..3 The census of 1 June 1860 enumerated on 30 August 1860 in Precinct 6, Paris, Lamar County, Texas, listed James "Hancock", a farmer, as a 23-year-old residing with L. M. Hancock.4 James F. Hancock and Mary Elizabeth Light Hancock were divorced before 1870 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas.5,6 Husband and wife were living separately. The census of 1 June 1870 enumerated on 27 September 1870 in the Paris post office area of Beat No. 5, Lamar County, Texas, listed Jas. Hancock, a farmer, as a 32-year-old residing with Jno. Good.7
