Jeremiah Theodore Willingham was born 11 July 1849 in Graves County, Kentucky.1,2 He was the son of John C. Willingham and Elizabeth J. Shelton. The census of 1 June 1850 enumerated on 31 August 1850 in Graves County, Kentucky, listed Jeremiah "Willingham" as a 1-year-old residing with J. C. Willingham.3 Jeremiah Theodore Willingham began military service on 2 January 1863; in Company D, 16th Kentucky Volunteers of the Union Army.1 He served in the military during the Civil War; in the Union Army

Jeremiah enlisted when he was not yet fourteen years old. Company D was later consolidated and became Company M, Sixteenth Kentucky Cavalry. At the close of the war, Mr. Willingham returned home with all the honors and privileges of a veteran, although he was still a boy.1
