Mr. Gilstrap was born at Fort Henry, Randolph County, Missouri, on February 8th, 1841 came to Macon County, Missouri with his parents in 1848, since which time he has resided in Macon County.
On January 22nd, 1863, he was married to Melia Ann Moody, daughter of William R. and Lucy Moody, who, on January 23rd, 1864, passed away leaving an infant son (William Luther) who, on August 19th, at the age of seven months, followed the young mother in death.
On January 27th, 1869, he was united in marriage to Armilda Landford Wilkin, daughter of Doctor John W. and Amanda Wilkin, who, on may 27th, 1923, passed away at their home on Jackson Street, Macon.
He became a member of the Antioch Christian church, Macon County, December 1862, and was baptised by Elder E. H. Lawson, an old pioneer Christian preacher, the first preacher he remembers seeing of hearing preach and still to the time of his death, remembered his subject and substance of his discourse. This was at a time when religious meetings were held at private houses in winter and groves in summer, church houses being few and far between.
He was the sixth child of a family of ten, six brothers and four sisters, eight of whom have answered to the call of the Grim Reaper, One brother, Bright H., who is ninety years old, yet lingers on this side, awaiting the last call of the family.
He and his good wife, Armilda Wilkins had no children of their own but practically reared and gave a common school education to seven orphan children, whom they raised to womanhood and manhood, all of whom became good and useful citizens, some graduating in Macon High School and one attended the State University.
His occupation has been that of a farmer, stock raised and real estate, until the physical conditions of him and his good wife forced him to retire from active business. Many elegant farm homes stand today as a monument to his energy and enterprise, scrupulously fair in all his dealings with his fellow man.
He was the pioneer road builder of Macon County, bought and operated, under Township organization, the first road grader that was used in the County. As Chairman of the Hudson Township Road Commission, he secured the services of the government road machinery and superintended and built the macadam road from the South end of Rollins Street South by was of Blees Military Academy, and known as the Government Road. The township being short of funds, he used $1,000.00 of his own private funds to complete the road, under an arrangement with the County Court to reimburse him from the County funds, which they did the following January.
He was Assessor under Township organization of Macon and Hudson township, for six years and was Chairman, during this time, of the Board of Township Assessors of Macon County, and directed the equilization of the county assessment.
