John Thomas Hipp was born 11 January 1843 in Laurens District, South Carolina.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Leonidas Hipp Sr. and Meeky East. Conflicting evidence states that John was born on 17 January 1843.3 The census of 1 June 1850 enumerated on 30 July 1850 in Laurens District, South Carolina, listed John "Hipp" as a 5-year-old residing with Meeky Hipp.4 The census of 1 June 1860 enumerated on 6 August 1860 in the Antoine post office area of Missouri Township, Pike County, Arkansas, listed J. T. Hipps as a 17-year-old residing with Meeky Hipps.5 He began military service in 1862 in Arkansas; in the 19th Arkansas Volunteers of the Confederate Army.6 He served in the military during the Civil War; the Confederate Army

John was wounded and captured at Arkansas Post, 1 Jan 1863, and carried to St. Louis, MO. He was exchanged at City Point, VA in June 1863 and was in the Army of the Tennessee the rest of the war. He took part in the battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, New Hope, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Franklin, and Nashville, having been in Pat Cleburne's division of Hardee's corps.6
