J. W. Baird Succumbs To Heavy Injuries Received
J. W. (Billie) Baird, 60, Sergeant Major in the Salvation Army unit here, died late yuesterday of injuries received shortly after noon Sunday when the car in which he was riding was crashed into by another two miles south of the city.
Baird died at Memorial Hospital where his injuries were described as "numerous" among them a badly fractured right leg and head injuries.
Baird, according to a witness was driving south and was making a turn off the highway into a side road, when a car drived by Arnold Afee, of clovis, crashed into the side of Baird's car, demolishing the machine. Baird's car was hit mid-section, said Capt. A. P. Winston, state police, who said Agee was held blameless in the accident. Baird apparently failed to indicate his intention to turn across the highway.
J. W. Hanners, of Clayton, a witness to the accident, brought Baird to the hospital here.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with Capt. Jan Hoogstadt, of the Army, conducting. Baird is survived by his widow, and a 14-year-old daughter, Billie. Steed Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Baird has been a resident of this region for about 12 years.4
