Joseph Alvin Baird was born 23 August 1830 in Perry County, Tennessee.1,2,3 He was the son of James Ithamar Baird and Susan McAllister. On the census of 1840 in Conway County, Arkansas, Joseph Alvin was probably a male of 10 and under 15 years of age residing with James Baird.4 The census of 1 June 1850 enumerated on 17 October 1850 in Dallas County, Arkansas, listed Joseph "Baid" as a 19-year-old residing with Susan Baid.5 He married Elizabeth Ann Campbell on 10 August 1854 in Dallas County, Arkansas..1

His wife, Margarett Delila Baird, died on 9 July 1900 in Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas. Joseph Alvin Baird married Susan E. (__?__) Swan on 25 January 1901 in Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas..12 Joseph Alvin Baird applied for a military pension on 24 August 1901 in Arkansas; as a veteran of Compan F, Arkansas Infantry from 1861 to 1865.14 He died on 10 October 1906 in Waldo, Columbia County, Arkansas.1,2,3,15 He was buried in the Holly Springs Cemetery located 3 miles northwest of Willisville, Nevada County, Arkansas, . His tombstone reads: "Baird, J. A. Co. F- 12 Ark. Inf.- CSA."16,17 Susan E. __?__ applied fora military pension as the widow of Joseph Alvin Baird on 13 August 1907 in Arkansas.14Margarett D.
